Music is not a Commodity. Music is a Commonality.
Music is not Manufactured. Music is written.
Music is not Commercial. Music is Creative.
—————————————————————
In 2004, over 80% of global music distribution was in the hands of four consolidated companies–the Big Four of SonyBMG, EMI, Universal and Warner Bros. Profits on music had soared into tens of billions of dollars, but few of these Greenbacks ever find their way back to the pockets of the musicians themselves. Industry conglomeration reduced the abundantly deep creative well of American culture to recycled, monotonous, empty music that flooded our airwaves in the last decade. Creativity is killed in the name of a buck for a select few. Simply put, Hannah and Miley should not be the Most Recognized artists of our era.
Fortunately, we are living through a period of revolution in the world of music. Leaps in technology, the wonders of the internet and plummeting production and distribution costs are leveling the playing fields and truly changing Who and What we are able to hear. Now, independent musicians who do not fit the profit-maximizing model are able to record and share their music with like-minded fans, whether they live down the street or in Portugal. MySpace, Facebook, LastFM, Pandora, PureVolume and other outlets have lead the way in providing meeting grounds from new musicians and prospective fans. We have entered an era where fans select Who and What they listen to.
